In this test, I compare the 1850 DC,18125 DC, 2460 EX/DG, 2870 EX, 50 Macro & 55200 DC, at 50mm at infinity from wide open through f16. I used a sturdy tripod and MF with a Nikon magnifier, auto SPP, no sharpening, 100% crops and slight levels. Here is how I would rate them: Number 1 - 50 f2.8 macro, unanimous; clearly gets the best "pop" that it is famous for. Number 2 - the 2870; soft at 2.8 but great otherwise. Number 3 - 18125 - this lens is a real sleeper and you can argue that it is as good as the 2870. Number 4 - 2460 - extremely soft at 2.8; sharpens up at f4.0 but not as much as its sister lens the 2870. Number 5 - 55200 - reasonably good at this length, especially for the price tag. Number 6 - the 1850; just doesn't make it at 50mm.
